Viking Tir is a 135-metre river vessel launched in 2019, purpose-built for Europe's inland waterways. A few figures worth holding in mind as you read:
All six sailings currently on sale with CruiseAway depart from September 2026, with itineraries running up to 16 nights. Every one of them is operated by Viking River Cruises, and five of the six are discounted.
Viking Tir offers three cabin grades, each sleeping two guests and designed around the river views that make this style of cruising worthwhile. Full layouts and deck positions are shown on the Viking Tir cabins and deck plans page.
Our cruise experts can talk through which grade suits your travel style and budget, and advise on fare inclusions before you book.
The main dining venue is The Restaurant, included in your cruise fare, where floor-to-ceiling windows frame the river as you move through it — regional specialities sit alongside timeless classics on the menu.
For something lighter and more casual, the World Café runs open kitchens with live cooking and international dishes, and spills out onto the Aquavit Terrace® — an open-air perch directly above the water, included in your onboard credit. The Pool Grill on Deck 7 keeps things informal beside the water, while the Wintergarden serves complimentary afternoon tea with finger sandwiches, scones, pastries and classical music from the resident musician.
For Nordic flavour at any hour, Mamsen's® in the Explorers' Lounge offers Norwegian specialities from breakfast through dinner at no extra charge. Specialist dining — Manfredi's Italian Restaurant®, The Chef's Table and The Kitchen Table — carries à la carte pricing or a reservation charge, and is worth booking ahead for a special evening.
The heart of daily life on Viking Tir is The Living Room, a generous central lounge where Viking Resident Musicians play live classical music and curated activities fill the day. Entry is complimentary; beverages are charged separately unless included in your package.
The Explorers' Lounge brings two-storey panoramic windows to the front of the ship — find a seat, order a drink and watch the landscape change. Torshavn® takes a different register, with live music in a jazz-lounge atmosphere that suits an evening cocktail. The Atrium and the Clinker Bar (styled on ancient Nordic longships and set in the Living Room atrium) round out your options, each with a distinct feel and a beverages-charged-separately policy unless your package covers them.
The Nordic Spa is open to all guests at no charge, with individual treatments and classes available at an additional cost. The sauna and snow grotto make it a genuine retreat after a long day ashore. The adjoining Fitness Centre is complimentary to use, with treadmills, ellipticals, exercise bikes and open space for free weights, yoga and pilates — though some classes carry a charge.
On deck, the Sports Deck offers a running track alongside boccie, mini golf and shuffleboard. The Main Pool has a retractable roof for year-round swimming, and there is an Infinity Pool framed by floor-to-ceiling windows — one of the first of its kind on a river vessel — alongside a hot tub. Films screen on the poolside screen in the evenings. The Theater seats up to 450 and runs lectures, films and TED Talks; depending on the programme, it can be divided into two separate HD cinemas.
Current sailings cover two of Europe's most rewarding river routes. Four itineraries follow the Danube, with departures from Budapest and Regensburg taking you through the grand cities and villages of Central Europe. Two itineraries sail the Rhine, departing from Amsterdam or Basel through the landscapes of Germany, France and Switzerland.
Because every sailing departs from Europe, Australian travellers will need flights to reach the embarkation port. CruiseAway can book the cruise, flights, pre- and post-cruise hotels and all transfers as a single DreamAway Package — the cruise is the centrepiece of a longer trip, not a stand-alone booking to piece together yourself.
CruiseAway offers a Best Price Guarantee on every sailing, so you are not paying more here than you would direct. Our cruise experts know Viking River Cruises' fares and inclusions in detail — they can tell you which cabin grade represents the best value for your itinerary and whether upgrading your beverage or shore excursion package makes sense before you sail.
For Australian travellers, the full trip — flights from home, the European hotel nights either side, airport and port transfers, and the river cruise itself — can be wrapped into one DreamAway Package. One conversation, one booking, one point of contact if anything changes.
If you are weighing up the fleet, CruiseAway also features Viking Astrild and Viking Forseti as other river ships in the Viking fleet, and Viking Sea, Viking Star, Viking Sky and Viking Ullur for those considering Viking's ocean voyages alongside a river itinerary.
Viking Tir carries 190 guests, served by a crew of 53. That ratio gives the ship a noticeably attentive feel — a meaningful difference on a river itinerary where the ship is also your hotel for the duration.
It depends on how much time you expect to spend on your private outdoor space. The Explorer Suite's 41.3 m² wraparound balcony is the standout choice for guests who want 270-degree river views from their own deck; the Veranda Stateroom at 19.0 m² gives you a full private veranda at a lower price point; and the Standard Outside Stateroom at 13.9 m² suits travellers who prefer to use the ship's shared spaces and keep the cabin cost down. Our cruise experts can walk you through the tradeoffs.
Manfredi's Italian Restaurant®, The Chef's Table and The Kitchen Table all carry à la carte pricing or a reservation charge. Given the intimate scale of the ship, these venues fill quickly — it is worth reserving a table early in your voyage, and Guest Services on board can assist with that.
The Restaurant, World Café, Aquavit Terrace®, Pool Grill, Wintergarden afternoon tea, Mamsen's®, The Living Room, the Main Pool, the Infinity Pool, the Fitness Centre, the Nordic Spa (access only), the Sports Deck and The Theater are all included in the base fare. Beverages at bars, specialist dining, spa treatments and some fitness classes carry an additional charge unless your package covers them. Confirm the exact inclusions for your chosen fare with CruiseAway before booking.
Yes. Because all Viking Tir departures embark in Europe — Budapest, Amsterdam, Regensburg or Basel — Australian guests need international flights. CruiseAway's DreamAway Packages bundle the flights, hotel nights before and after the cruise, transfers and the cruise itself into a single booking, so there is nothing left to arrange independently.
