Viking Eldir entered service in 2026, purpose-built for European river cruising. Here is what sizes her up quickly:
She sails the Danube, Rhine and Main rivers, with departures from Amsterdam, Basel, Budapest, Bucharest and Nuremberg. Because every embarkation port is overseas, this cruise sits naturally in the middle of a longer trip — which is where CruiseAway's DreamAway Packages come in, bundling your flights, hotel nights either side and transfers into one booking.
Viking Eldir carries three cabin grades, each sleeping two guests and designed to bring the river as close as possible to where you are sitting.
The Explorer Suite (ES), at 41.3 m², is the most spacious option aboard, with a wraparound veranda delivering 270-degree river views — the widest outlook available on the ship. For guests who want a private outdoor terrace without committing to a suite, the Veranda Stateroom A (19.0 m²) offers floor-to-ceiling glass doors opening onto its own veranda. The French Balcony Stateroom C (12.5 m²) splits the difference: open the glass doors and the river air comes straight in, without the step onto a full outdoor deck. Full deck plans and a side-by-side comparison of all three grades are on the Viking Eldir cabins and deck plans page.
The main dining room, The Restaurant, is included in your cruise fare and serves regional specialities and timeless classics framed by floor-to-ceiling river views. For something more informal, the World Café runs open kitchens with live cooking and international dishes — including premium sushi and seafood — and connects directly to the Aquavit Terrace®, where you can eat outdoors directly above the water.
Daytime hunger is answered at the Pool Grill, a casual poolside spot with freshly prepared dishes and a salad bar, all included in your fare. Every afternoon the Wintergarden lays on complimentary afternoon tea: finger sandwiches, fresh scones, pastries and international teas beside the main pool. In the Explorers' Lounge, Mamsen's® serves Norwegian specialities from breakfast through to dinner at no extra cost, honouring the Nordic heritage that runs through the ship's design.
Two speciality venues carry a separate charge. Manfredi's Italian Restaurant® delivers an authentic Italian trattoria experience and can seat a private group for a special occasion. The Chef's Table offers a multi-course tasting menu with sommelier-paired wines, available in the restaurant or a dedicated private dining room; reservations are required. The Kitchen Table is an interactive culinary experience built around the local food culture of each destination — confirm at booking whether it is included in your fare or available as a separate reservation.
The Living Room sits at the heart of the ship, offering generous seating, a calm social atmosphere and live classical music from Viking's Resident Musicians. Entry is included; beverages are charged separately unless covered by your package. In the evening the atmosphere shifts — Torshavn® brings live jazz-lounge music in a setting reminiscent of Hollywood's golden age, while the Atrium acts as a natural meeting point over cocktails.
Two-storey panoramic windows in the Explorers' Lounge frame the passing riverbanks as you settle in with a drink. For something more distinctly Nordic, the Clinker Bar within the Living Room atrium evokes the lines of ancient longships in its design. Beverages are charged separately at all bar venues unless your fare includes a beverage package.
The Infinity Pool — one of the first of its kind on a river vessel — is surrounded by a teak deck with floor-to-ceiling windows, creating the sensation of swimming at the very edge of the destination. A hot tub sits alongside it. The Main Pool with Retractable Roof keeps swimming on the agenda whatever the weather, and in the evenings doubles as an outdoor cinema with films on a large poolside screen.
The Nordic Spa is open to all guests at no charge for access; individual treatments and classes are booked and charged separately. Facilities include a sauna and a snow grotto. The Fitness Centre provides treadmills, elliptical machines, exercise bikes and free-weight space, also complimentary to use (some classes charged separately). The Sports Deck adds a running track, boccie, mini golf and shuffleboard in the open air.
The Theater seats up to 450 guests for lectures, films and TED Talks, and can be configured as two separate HD cinemas. Admission is included in your fare. Guest Services is available around the clock to arrange shore excursions, museum visits, concert tickets or restaurant reservations ashore.
All thirteen sailings currently on sale depart after September 2026 and run up to 21 nights. Six itineraries explore the Danube and six the Rhine, with a further sailing on the Main. The most frequent embarkation point is Amsterdam, followed by Basel, Budapest and Bucharest. Fares start from A$5,895pp*. Because every departure boards in Europe — the Netherlands, Switzerland, Hungary or Romania — the cruise is naturally the centrepiece of a longer trip rather than a standalone sailing. CruiseAway's cruise experts can put the flights, the hotel nights before and after, and all the transfers on the same booking through a DreamAway Package, so nothing is left to coordinate separately. Whatever cabin grade suits your travel style, we help you match it to the right fare inclusions and put the whole holiday in one place — backed by our Best Price Guarantee.
Viking Eldir was launched in 2026, making her one of the newest vessels in the Viking River Cruises fleet. The sailings currently on sale through CruiseAway depart from September 2026 onwards.
Viking Eldir carries 190 guests across 95 cabins, looked after by a crew of 53. The relatively intimate scale means a guest-to-crew ratio that supports attentive service throughout the voyage.
The Explorer Suite (ES) has a wraparound veranda with 270-degree river views — the widest outdoor outlook on the ship. Guests who want outdoor space at a smaller footprint can choose the Veranda Stateroom A, which has its own private veranda via floor-to-ceiling glass doors. The French Balcony Stateroom C opens fully to the river air without a step-out deck. See the full comparison on the cabins and deck plans page.
Yes — every embarkation port is in Europe (Amsterdam, Basel, Budapest, Bucharest or Nuremberg), so flights from Australia are required. CruiseAway can package the cruise alongside your international flights, pre- or post-cruise hotel stays and all transfers as a single DreamAway Package, so you have one booking and one point of contact throughout.
If you are weighing up your options within the fleet, Viking Astrild and Viking Forseti are two other Viking river ships you may be choosing between. For ocean sailings with Viking, Viking Sea, Viking Star, Viking Sky and Viking Ullur are all in the fleet — our cruise experts can help you decide which ship and itinerary best fits your plans.
