Viking Gymir is a Viking River Cruises longship launched in 2022, designed to carry 190 guests attended by a crew of 53 across 95 cabins. Her 135-metre hull is purpose-built for European river itineraries, and her godmother is Alma Deutscher. She sails the Danube and, seasonally, into Western Europe — departing from Budapest, Amsterdam and Passau.
Most sailings depart from Budapest or Amsterdam, with additional departures from Passau. The Western Europe itinerary runs up to 16 nights, giving a full picture of the region at a river's pace.
The main dining room, The Restaurant, is included in your fare and serves regional specialities alongside classic dishes with floor-to-ceiling views of passing riverbanks.
World Café on Deck 7 Aft brings open kitchens and live cooking to the table, with international dishes, premium sushi and seafood; you can eat inside or step out to the Aquavit Terrace® directly above the water. For something lighter, the Pool Grill on Deck 7 offers casual poolside plates and a salad bar, also included. Afternoon tea in the Wintergarden — finger sandwiches, scones, pastries and international teas accompanied by live classical music — is complimentary and held beside the main pool on Deck 7 Midship.
Norwegian comfort food is the calling card of Mamsen's® in the Explorers' Lounge on Deck 7, serving Norse home-style dishes at breakfast, lunch and dinner at no extra charge. For something more ceremonial, The Chef's Table on Aft Deck 1 offers a multi-course tasting menu with wine pairings — reservations are required and a charge applies. Manfredi's Italian Restaurant® on Aft Deck 1 serves authentic Italian cuisine à la carte in a trattoria atmosphere, with a private dining room available for groups. The Kitchen Table on Deck 1 Aft is an interactive culinary experience built around regional ingredients and cooking techniques — confirm inclusion when you book.
The Living Room is the social heart of the ship, with generous seating, a calm atmosphere and live classical music from Viking Resident Musicians; entry is complimentary, with beverages and food charged separately unless included in your package. Adjacent is the Clinker Bar, whose Nordic longship-inspired design makes it a distinctive spot for a drink in the Living Room atrium.
Torshavn® recalls the jazz lounges of Hollywood's golden age, with live music and cocktails in an intimate setting. The Explorers' Lounge offers two-storey panoramic river views and the Atrium provides a light, open meeting point — both are free to enter, with beverages charged separately.
The Theater accommodates up to 450 guests and screens lectures, films and TED Talks; it can be divided into two HD cinemas. All admission is included in your fare, so you can move freely between screenings and talks throughout the voyage.
Viking Gymir carries two pools: a heated main pool with a retractable roof for year-round swimming, and an infinity pool — one of the first of its kind at sea — with floor-to-ceiling windows that put the river at arm's length. The main pool shows evening films on a large poolside screen. Both pools are included in your fare; food and beverages at the Pool Bar are charged separately.
The Nordic Spa is open to all guests at no extra charge for general access, with the sauna, snow grotto and adjoining fitness centre available as a wellness circuit. Individual treatments and fitness classes carry a separate charge, as do services at the Hair Salon. The Sports Deck adds a running track, boccie, mini golf and shuffleboard to the mix; guided classes such as yoga are charged separately.
Gymir's 95 cabins cover three grades. Full details, floor plans and deck-by-deck layouts are on the Viking Gymir cabins and deck plans page.
Current sailings on Viking Gymir depart from late September 2026, with four Danube itineraries and one Western Europe sailing available through CruiseAway. Prices start from A$3,195pp*. The sailings run up to 16 nights and depart from Budapest, Amsterdam and Passau.
All embarkation ports require an international flight from Australia, which means the cruise sits naturally in the middle of a longer trip. CruiseAway's DreamAway Packages let us build the flights, hotels either side and transfers into a single booking alongside the cruise itself — one itinerary, one payment, one contact if anything changes. Our cruise experts know these ships and fares in detail and will help you choose the cabin grade and inclusions that suit your travel style. Every booking is covered by our Best Price Guarantee.

The Veranda Stateroom A is the most popular starting point: at 19 m², it gives you a private veranda with floor-to-ceiling glass doors and river views, without the premium of the Explorer Suite. The French Balcony Stateroom C is more compact at 12.5 m² but still delivers the fully opening glass-door experience that makes river cruising feel immediate. See the cabin and deck plan page for a side-by-side comparison.
The main dining venues — The Restaurant, World Café, Pool Grill, Aquavit Terrace, Mamsen's and the Wintergarden afternoon tea — are all included, as are the pools, the Nordic Spa (general access), the fitness centre, The Theater and the Sports Deck. Speciality restaurants such as Manfredi's and The Chef's Table carry à la carte or cover charges, and beverages at the bars are charged separately unless you hold a beverage package.
Guest Services operates around the clock and can arrange shore excursions, museum visits, concerts and special arrangements ashore — the service itself is complimentary. You are not required to book excursions through the ship, but the team can handle the logistics if you prefer everything coordinated in one place.
Yes. Because every embarkation port — Budapest, Amsterdam and Passau — requires an international flight, CruiseAway can package the flights, pre- or post-cruise hotel nights and transfers together with the cruise fare through a DreamAway Package, so the whole trip is on one booking.
Viking operates a wide fleet on European rivers. Ships in the same fleet available through CruiseAway include Viking Astrild and Viking Forseti on river itineraries, and ocean-going ships such as Viking Sea, Viking Star, Viking Sky and Viking Ullur. The full fleet and what sailing with the line is like are covered on the Viking River Cruises page.
