Sonata at a glance

Sonata is Oceania Cruises' newest ship, launched in 2027 and purpose-built around the line's culinary and enrichment philosophy. Here is what defines her at a glance:

  • Cruise line: Oceania Cruises
  • Known for: an exceptional breadth of dining venues, hands-on culinary classes and destination-led enrichment programmes

She sails a wide programme spanning the Caribbean, British Isles, Transatlantic, Norway and multiple Mediterranean regions, departing from ports including Miami, Rome (Civitavecchia), Barcelona, Southampton and Lisbon.

Dining on Sonata

Sonata carries eight dining venues — more than most ships at this capacity — ranging from a grand flagship restaurant to intimate, reservations-only rooms, all included in your cruise fare unless noted.

The Grand Dining Room is the heart of the ship's dining, with daily-changing menus that balance continental classics with global flavours and an Executive Chef's tasting menu. With at least ten starters and ten mains each evening, along with vitality options, there is always something to suit — and it is fully included in your fare.

For specialist evenings, four signature restaurants each carry their own character. Polo Grill delivers classic American steakhouse cooking with premium aged USDA Angus beef and Maine lobster in jacket-service surroundings. Jacques presents classical French cuisine reimagined by Master Chef Pépin — think Coq au Vin and Confit de Canard alongside an extensive cheese and wine list. Toscana wraps diners in Chianti leather and hand-blown Venetian glass for multi-generational Italian family recipes, with dishes served on exclusive Versace porcelain. Red Ginger brings Pan-Asian cooking to the table — Thai, Korean, Japanese and Malaysian flavours in dishes such as spicy duck oil watermelon salad and seven-spice lamb rack. Each of these carries a cover charge.

For something more relaxed, Terrace Café opens onto a shaded outdoor area with sea views, running from fresh pastries at breakfast through to evening dishes including grilled lobster, rotisserie and fresh sushi — all included. Aquamar Kitchen takes a lighter Mediterranean approach with breakfast bowls, avocado toast and Lebanese-inspired lunch plates. Poolside, Waves Grill serves made-to-order burgers, herb-marinated fish and hand-dipped milkshakes through the afternoon.

At the intimate end of the scale, Privée seats just eight guests per evening for multi-course wine-pairing menus by La Reserve, in a dramatically lit room with a blossom-shaped ceiling installation and floor-to-ceiling ocean views. A cover charge applies.

Coffee and pastries throughout the day are covered at Baristas, a Viennese-style café with 270-degree sea views serving complimentary Illy coffee, croissants and biscotti.

Enrichment and things to do on Sonata

Sonata's enrichment programme is built around the idea that the best experiences happen when guests learn something — from cooking to creativity to capturing what they see.

The Culinary Center is a fully equipped teaching kitchen where hands-on classes explore the regional cuisines of each destination, led by onboard chefs. The classes are included in your fare, and optional chef-led food tours extend the experience ashore. Artist Loft offers painting, drawing, sculpture and photography classes with ocean views — tuition varies by voyage and is included. LYNC Digital Center provides complimentary photography and video lessons run by a digital concierge, covering everything from smartphone basics to travel composition. The Library, panelled in warm wood with floor-to-ceiling glass walls, is the quieter counterpart — a traditional reading room for books, destination research or simply watching the ocean.

Active guests can use the Running Track and Sports Deck at the top of the ship, with open-ocean views in every direction. The Fitness Center includes treadmills, strength equipment and a Kinesis® wall, with complimentary group fitness classes in yoga and Pilates; personal training is available for a fee. The pool deck's organic design mirrors the sea around it — sunbeds and a pool are included, while shaded cabanas and waterside daybeds carry an additional charge.

The Casino takes its cue from classic European gaming rooms, with roulette, blackjack and a casino bar. Entry is complimentary; wagers and drinks are separately charged. Ship Boutiques offer curated selections from holiday essentials to fine jewellery. Onboard wellbeing is centred at Aquamar Spa + Vitality Center, with modern fitness facilities included and individual spa therapies and salon services available at a charge.

Cabins and suites on Sonata

Sonata's cabin range runs from veranda staterooms to an extraordinary two-bedroom Owner's Suite. Full details, including deck plans, are on the Sonata cabins and deck plans page.

At the top of the range, the Owner's Suite covers 235 m² as a two-bedroom configuration sleeping up to four guests — a genuinely house-scale space at sea. The Concierge-level veranda cabin (A1) at 27 m² adds room service with an extended lunch and dinner menu drawn from the Grand Dining Room, exclusive to this grade.

Suite and Concierge-level guests also have access to two private spaces: the Executive Lounge and the Concierge Lounge, both keycard-access retreats with dedicated concierge staff and complimentary drinks, coffee and snacks throughout the day — a quieter alternative to the main public areas.

Where Sonata sails

Sonata covers an ambitious range of regions across her programme. The Caribbean is the busiest part of her itinerary, with sailings predominantly departing from Miami — browse Caribbean cruises in 2027 or the 2026 season to see what is available. She also sails the Transatlantic and the British Isles, with sailings from Southampton — see 2027 departures from Southampton and explore British Isles & Ireland offers.

In Europe, she calls across the Western Mediterranean, Mediterranean Sea, Norway, Baltic Sea and Eastern Mediterranean, sailing from Rome (Civitavecchia), Barcelona, Lisbon, Trieste, Copenhagen and Ijmuiden (Amsterdam). Mediterranean cruises in 2027 and 2026 are both open, and all Europe cruises can be searched from one page. On the US West Coast she departs Los Angeles on Mexican Riviera sailings — see cruises from LA to Mexico for those departures. Sonata's itinerary also includes Reykjavik; see Reykjavik sailings for routes that include Iceland.

For longer voyages, the Oceania fleet's grand voyage programme is worth exploring — Oceania World Cruises and Grand Voyages brings together the line's extended itineraries in one place. Repositioning voyages between regions can also offer exceptional value; see repositioning cruises 2026 for current options.

Why book Sonata with CruiseAway

CruiseAway's Best Price Guarantee means you book with confidence — if you find a lower price for the same sailing, we match it. Our cruise experts specialise in Oceania itineraries and know how the cabin grades, fare inclusions and onboard credits stack up across different sailing dates, so you get the right cabin and the right fare for your circumstances rather than just the headline price.

Because every Sonata sailing departs from an overseas port — Miami, Rome, Barcelona, Southampton, Lisbon and others — the cruise is the middle of a longer trip, and we book the flights, the hotel either side and the transfers as one holiday through our DreamAway Packages. Everything goes on one booking, one contact and one itinerary.

Other Oceania ships to consider

If you are weighing up ships within the Oceania fleet, CruiseAway also sells sailings on Regatta, Riviera, Allura, Marina, Insignia and Sirena — each with their own itineraries and cabin configurations.

Alternatives to Sonata

Seven Seas Mariner (Regent Seven Seas Cruises) sails from the same ports and calls at many of the same countries — including the United States, Spain, France and Italy — making it a straight alternative with no flight required to reach a departure port. See Seven Seas Mariner for sailings and pricing.

Viking Sea (Viking Ocean Cruises) also departs from the same ports as Sonata and shares a significant number of overlapping sailings, offering another no-fly option for those choosing between ships on similar routes. See Viking Sea for current availability.

Common questions about Sonata

Which dining venues on Sonata carry an extra charge?

Polo Grill, Jacques, Toscana and Red Ginger all operate on an à la carte basis with a cover charge — reservation is required at each. Privée also carries a charge for its wine-pairing tasting menus, and the casino charges for wagers and bar drinks. Everything else — The Grand Dining Room, Terrace Café, Aquamar Kitchen, Waves Grill and Baristas — is included in your cruise fare.

What is included in a Concierge-level cabin on Sonata?

Concierge-level veranda cabins (grade A1) add room service with an extended lunch and dinner menu from the Grand Dining Room — a benefit exclusive to that grade. Concierge guests also have keycard access to the private Concierge Lounge and Executive Lounge, with a dedicated concierge team and complimentary refreshments throughout the day.

How long are the cruises on Sonata?

Current sailings on Sonata run up to 59 nights in duration, so the programme covers everything from shorter regional voyages to extended grand sailings. Departures begin from late September 2026.

Which cabin should I book on Sonata?

That depends on how much space and which services matter most to you. The 235 m² Owner's Suite suits guests who want a genuinely expansive two-bedroom layout at sea. The Concierge A1 veranda cabin is a practical step up from a standard balcony if in-room dining from the Grand Dining Room and private lounge access are a priority. Our cruise experts can walk through the options with you — contact CruiseAway to get a recommendation based on your sailing date and travel party.

Does Sonata sail any cruises with European river ports or Baltic stops?

Yes — Sonata's programme includes Baltic Sea sailings departing from Copenhagen and Ijmuiden (Amsterdam), as well as voyages touching Norway. You can browse Denmark cruises or the full Europe cruises search to see current availability across all northern European routes.
