Travel Tips for Asia

Asia Cruises

From the neon-lit skylines of Hong Kong to the tranquil temples of Thailand and the island-dotted seas of Indonesia, Asia cruises open the door to one of the world’s most diverse and rewarding regions. For Australian travellers, an Asia cruise offers the perfect balance of culture, cuisine, history and relaxation, all without the hassle of constant packing and unpacking.

At CruiseAway, we specialise in handpicked cruises in Asia designed for Aussie holidaymakers. Whether you’re chasing street food in Penang, exploring ancient shrines in Japan or soaking up the sun in Vietnam, we’ll match you with the right ship, itinerary and value-packed fare.

What Is an Asia Cruise?

An Asia cruise is a voyage that explores ports across East, Southeast and sometimes South Asia. Sailings can range from short, four-night getaways to extended journeys spanning multiple countries. Popular departure hubs include Singapore, Hong Kong, Tokyo and Bangkok, with many itineraries timed to connect smoothly with flights from Australia.

You’ll find everything from contemporary mega-ships packed with entertainment to smaller premium and luxury vessels focused on destination immersion. Depending on the itinerary, your cruise may include:

  • Futuristic cities like Singapore and Seoul
  • Historic trading ports such as Ho Chi Minh City
  • Beach escapes in Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia
  • Cultural heartlands across Japan and China

Many Australians choose cruises to Asia for the sheer variety. In one seamless holiday, you might wander through centuries-old temples in the morning and dine on world-class cuisine back on board at night.

Benefits of Cruising Asia

Asia is vast and wonderfully complex. Cruising makes it accessible, comfortable and surprisingly affordable.

See Multiple Countries in One Trip

Distances between major ports are ideal for cruising. Rather than juggling trains, flights and hotel check-ins, your ship becomes your floating hotel. Unpack once and wake up somewhere new almost every day.

Outstanding Value for Australians

Compared to land-based touring, an Asia cruise often bundles accommodation, main meals, entertainment and transport between destinations into one upfront fare. At CruiseAway, we also secure exclusive deals and added inclusions tailored to the Australian market.

A Blend of Modern Comfort and Ancient Culture

Few regions contrast old and new quite like Asia. Explore centuries-old temples, colonial architecture and traditional villages, then return to a ship offering resort-style pools, fine dining and Broadway-calibre shows. Leading cruise lines deploy some of their most innovative vessels to the region, particularly around Singapore and Hong Kong.

Flexible Itineraries

There’s a strong range of se asia cruises ideal for first-timers, as well as longer voyages linking Asia with Australia. Repositioning cruises between Sydney, Brisbane or Fremantle and Asian ports are especially popular with travellers who prefer fewer long-haul flights.

Cuisine Worth Travelling For

For many Australians, food is reason enough to cruise Asia. From hawker centres in Singapore to fresh sushi in Japan and fragrant pho in Vietnam, the region’s culinary diversity is extraordinary. On board, you’ll often find Asian-inspired menus and specialty restaurants reflecting the destinations you visit.

FAQs About Asia Cruises

When is the best time to cruise Asia?

The ideal season depends on the region. Southeast Asia is generally best between November and April, when conditions are drier and slightly cooler. Japan’s spring cherry blossom season and autumn foliage cruises are also highly sought after. Our CruiseAway consultants can help match your travel dates with the most favourable conditions.

How long should an Asia cruise be?

First-time visitors often choose seven to ten nights to sample a handful of countries. If you have more time, 14-night or longer itineraries provide deeper exploration. Repositioning voyages between Australia and Asia can run from 16 to 25 nights and offer excellent value per day.

Do Australians need visas?

Visa requirements vary by destination and nationality. Many ports across Southeast Asia allow short tourist visits for Australian passport holders, but some countries require advance applications. Always check official government advice before departure.

Are Asia cruises suitable for families?

Absolutely. Larger ships sailing throughout Asia feature kids’ clubs, water slides and family-friendly entertainment. Shore excursions range from cultural workshops to beach days, making it easy to balance education with fun.

Can I combine a land holiday with my cruise?

Yes, and we highly recommend it. Many travellers add a few nights in Singapore, Tokyo or Hong Kong before or after their sailing. CruiseAway can arrange hotels, transfers and flights to create a seamless door-to-door package.

An Asia cruise is more than a holiday. It’s a journey through ancient traditions, bold flavours and unforgettable landscapes, all delivered with the comfort and ease that cruising does best. When you’re ready to explore Asia by sea, our Australian-based CruiseAway team is here to help you find the right itinerary at the right price.

8 day cruise with the Pacific Encounter to Brisbane
familyrelaxed
We booked regular time dining and found this easier than anytime dining as it pre-booked attendances for us at various restaurants. Booked tender process to go to Conflict Island was good.
The off boarding process (to Brisbane) was fairly tedious and took several hours, mostly of waiting in queues.

3 of us in a balcony room, it was fine.

11 day cruise on board the Pacific Encounter from Brisbane

P&O provide an almost-perfect experience in a range of ways: dining, shore tours, entertainment. One of the most impressive aspects were the talks on PNG history, WWII, farming and literacy. That was a real bonus and compensated for the less impressive commentary on the WWII shore tour.
The shore excursions are expensive for what is provided and the commentary on the WWII New Britain tour could have been a lot better. Our guide just didn't know enough, although P&O indicate that the guides are not highly knowledgeable. Perhaps P&O could incentivise them to read up on the subject they are covering, although one was well read. Also, the war museum is badly run down and could do with some expert curating, maybe P&O could provide some funding for this.

The cabin is well designed and the furnishings very good. It is not brand new so there is some wear and tear. The flooring on the balcony needs some work as it was uneven and I had to put a chair on the affected part to avoid tripping on it.
