AmaStella at a glance

Built in 2016 and carrying up to 156 guests in 78 cabins, AmaStella is an AmaWaterways river ship designed for the intimate scale that European waterways reward. At 135 metres she fits the Rhine's locks and riverside towns that larger vessels cannot reach. A crew of 51 looks after guests, keeping the ratio tight enough that service feels personal rather than procedural. She sails the rivers of Western Europe, spending the majority of her time on the Rhine between the Netherlands and Switzerland.

Dining on AmaStella

AmaStella offers two distinct dining venues, both included in your cruise fare and open to all guests.

The Main Restaurant is the culinary heart of the ship: open seating lets you dine when it suits you, regional cuisine changes with the itinerary, and panoramic river views frame every meal. For something more theatrical, The Chef's Table seats a smaller group around a dedicated chef who prepares a multi-course tasting menu in an intimate, open-kitchen setting. There is no extra charge for either venue.

Self-service Specialty Coffee & Tea is available throughout the day at no cost — useful before an early shore excursion or as a quiet afternoon ritual.

On-board spaces and activities

The Sun Deck is the ship's open-air living room: an unobstructed upper-deck space for watching the Rhine's scenery unfold, with a Heated Sun-Deck Pool and swim-up bar for when you'd rather not leave the water to get a drink. A Walking Track circles the same deck for a morning jog with a view, and the Fitness Centre below carries modern cardio and strength equipment — complimentary to use, with specialist classes available at an additional charge.

Evening life centres on the Main Lounge, where talks on the next day's ports sit alongside live entertainment and a fully stocked bar. The Library offers a quieter option: books, games and a comfortable seat away from the deck. A Massage & Hair Salon is on board for treatments at an extra charge, and the Gift Shop carries regional souvenirs and everyday essentials.

One feature worth highlighting separately: AmaStella carries a Complimentary Bicycle Fleet. Guests can borrow a bike at no cost and explore each port independently — no guided tour required, no extra fee.

Cabins on AmaStella

All 78 cabins sleep two guests; the full layout is on the AmaStella cabins and deck plans page. Three grades cover the range:

  • Outside Cabin D (14.9 m²) — a compact outside-view cabin that connects you to the passing scenery through a river-facing window, without the balcony premium.
  • Balcony Cabin AA (21.8 m²) — a dual-access arrangement combining a drop-down French balcony window-wall with a separate outside balcony, so you can enjoy open air in two different ways from the same cabin.
  • Suite – Two Private Balconies SS (32.5 m²) — the largest accommodation on the ship, with two private balconies offering the most generous outdoor space available on board.

Our cruise experts can walk you through which grade suits your travel style and budget — the differences matter more on a river ship, where cabin layout shapes how you spend your time at anchor.

Where AmaStella sails

Current sailings depart from two ports: Amsterdam in the Netherlands and Basel in Switzerland, with itineraries running along the Rhine and into Western Europe. Trips extend to up to 14 nights. Because every departure involves a flight from Australia, CruiseAway treats this as the middle of a longer journey — our DreamAway Packages bundle the cruise with your international flights, hotel nights either side and port transfers, so every moving part is confirmed in one booking.

Browse available sailings through our Europe river cruises search, or go straight to European cruise deals if you want to filter by price.

Why book AmaStella with CruiseAway

Our Best Price Guarantee applies site-wide — if you find the same sailing cheaper elsewhere, we'll match it. Behind that promise are our cruise experts: specialists who know AmaWaterways' ships and fares in detail and can advise on cabin grades, inclusions and the best time to book. And for any AmaStella sailing — which, departing from Amsterdam or Basel, will always involve flying from Australia — we can build a DreamAway Package that covers the flights, pre- or post-cruise hotels and all transfers under a single booking reference.

Common questions about AmaStella

Is AmaStella suitable for solo travellers?

All cabins on AmaStella are configured for two guests, so solo travellers booking a cabin on their own will typically pay a single supplement. Our cruise experts can advise on current supplement rates and whether any sailings carry reduced or waived supplements at the time of booking.

What is included in the AmaStella cruise fare?

The Main Restaurant, The Chef's Table, the Specialty Coffee & Tea Station, the Heated Sun-Deck Pool, the Fitness Centre, the Walking Track, the Library and the Complimentary Bicycle Fleet are all included. The Main Lounge is open to all guests; drinks there are charged separately unless you hold a beverage package. Spa treatments and specialist fitness classes carry an additional charge.

Which cabin should I book on AmaStella?

It depends on how much time you expect to spend in your cabin and how important outdoor access is to you. The Outside Cabin D is the most compact option and suits guests who plan to be ashore or on the Sun Deck for most of the day. The Balcony Cabin AA adds the dual French-balcony and outside-balcony setup — worth it if you want to watch the Rhine from your own private space. The Suite gives you the most floor space and two separate balconies, which makes a meaningful difference on longer itineraries. Our cruise experts can match you to the right grade for your trip.

Do I need to book excursions separately?

AmaStella's Complimentary Bicycle Fleet means independent exploration at each port costs nothing extra. Guided shore excursions are offered by AmaWaterways and are typically charged separately; the detail varies by itinerary. When you book through CruiseAway, our cruise experts can clarify exactly what shore excursion inclusions apply to your specific sailing.

Are there other AmaWaterways ships I can compare?

Yes — AmaWaterways operates several ships you can browse on CruiseAway: AmaBella, AmaCello, AmaVida, AmaReina and AmaVerde are all in the fleet. Each sails its own itineraries, and our cruise experts can help you decide which ship and routing fits your travel plans best.
