AmaSofia at a glance

AmaSofia is AmaWaterways' 2024-built river ship, designed for European waterway cruising. She carries up to 152 guests in 76 cabins, attended by a crew of 51, and stretches 135 metres along the water — a scale suited to the historic locks and river ports of the Rhine and Danube. She sails a European river programme departing from Amsterdam, Basel, Budapest and Nuremberg, covering the Rhine, Danube, Ijssel and wider Western Europe waterways.

Dining on AmaSofia

AmaSofia offers two distinct dining experiences, both included in your cruise fare. The Main Restaurant is the culinary heart of the ship: open seating times, regional cuisine and river views make it a relaxed setting for every meal, where informal conversation with fellow guests comes naturally. For something more theatrical, The Chef's Table seats guests in an intimate space while a dedicated chef constructs a multi-course tasting menu in front of them — personalised attention, no surcharge, and a genuinely different evening.

Between meals, the Specialty Coffee & Tea Station is self-service and complimentary, available whenever you need a morning espresso or an afternoon brew. The Main Lounge carries a fully stocked bar where drinks are charged separately unless you hold a beverage package, but the space itself — cocktails, port talks, live evening entertainment — is the social heart of the ship.

On-deck life and activities

The Sun Deck runs the width of the ship and offers unobstructed panoramic views: ideal for watching the riverbank slide past, dining al fresco when conditions allow, or simply sitting with a book. Set into the upper deck is a heated pool with an integrated swim-up bar — a genuine resort amenity on a river ship, included in your fare.

Staying active is easy. The Sun Deck walking track is complimentary, and the Fitness Centre provides modern cardio and strength equipment at no charge (specialist classes carry a fee). Ashore, the ship's complimentary bicycle fleet lets you explore each port at your own pace, without booking a guided tour — a freedom that suits independent travellers and curious wanderers alike.

Wind down in the Massage & Hair Salon — the space is open to all guests, though treatments and hairdressing services are charged separately. The Library offers a quieter alternative: books, games and a refuge from the deck on slower afternoons. A Gift Shop rounds out the on-board offering with essentials and regional keepsakes.

Cabins and suites on AmaSofia

AmaSofia's 76 cabins span three main grades, and the full layout is laid out on the AmaSofia cabins and deck plans page.

  • Suite SS — at 32.5 m², the most spacious accommodation aboard. A balcony cabin built for guests who want genuine room to move and relax, sleeping two.
  • Balcony Cabin AA — 21.8 m², among the most spacious standard balcony options on the ship, sleeping two.
  • Outside Cabin D — 14.9 m², with a fixed outside-view window that brings natural daylight and river views all day, sleeping two.

Our cruise experts can talk through which grade suits your travel style and budget — the right cabin makes a material difference on a river ship where you spend more time in port than at sea.

Where AmaSofia sails

AmaSofia's programme concentrates on Europe's two greatest river arteries. The Rhine sailings — the largest part of the schedule — run frequently from Amsterdam through the Netherlands and into Germany and Switzerland, finishing or starting in Basel. Danube itineraries depart from Budapest, tracing the river through Central Europe. Shorter sailings also explore the Ijssel and other Western European waterways. Itineraries run to a maximum of 16 nights. Browse the full range of Europe river cruises or go straight to European cruise deals to see what's available with current pricing.

Because AmaSofia sails exclusively in Europe, every Australian guest will need to fly to join her — in Amsterdam, Basel, Budapest or Nuremberg. CruiseAway's DreamAway Packages bring the flights, pre- or post-cruise hotels and transfers together with the cruise into one booking, so nothing falls through the cracks.

Booking AmaSofia with CruiseAway

AmaWaterways operates AmaSofia, and all 25 sailings currently on sale through CruiseAway are with them. Our Best Price Guarantee applies across the programme, and our cruise experts are on hand to match the right itinerary, cabin grade and fare inclusions to your plans. Prices start from A$4,468pp* for sailings departing from late September 2026.

Common questions about AmaSofia

When was AmaSofia built?

AmaSofia was built in 2024, making her one of the most recently launched ships in the AmaWaterways fleet. She was designed from the outset for European river itineraries.

How many guests does AmaSofia carry?

AmaSofia carries a maximum of 152 guests across her 76 cabins, with a crew of 51 — a ratio that allows for attentive, personalised service throughout your cruise.

Are meals included on AmaSofia?

Yes. Both the Main Restaurant and The Chef's Table are included in your cruise fare, as are the Specialty Coffee & Tea Station, the heated pool and most on-board facilities. Bar drinks in the Main Lounge are charged separately unless you hold a beverage package, and spa treatments at the Massage & Hair Salon carry a fee.

Which cabin should I book on AmaSofia?

The Suite SS at 32.5 m² is the most generous option and suits guests who want a proper living space as well as sleeping quarters. The Balcony Cabin AA at 21.8 m² offers a strong balance of space and value among the balcony grades. The Outside Cabin D at 14.9 m² keeps costs lower while still delivering natural light and river views all day. Our cruise experts can walk you through the differences and what's currently available on your preferred sailing.

Do I need to book flights separately?

All AmaSofia sailings depart from European ports — Amsterdam, Basel, Budapest or Nuremberg — so Australian guests will need to fly to join the ship. CruiseAway can build a DreamAway Package that includes your flights, any pre- or post-cruise hotels and transfers alongside the river cruise, all on one booking.

Are there other AmaWaterways ships I can consider?

Yes — CruiseAway also sells sailings on other ships in the AmaWaterways fleet, including AmaBella, AmaCello, AmaVida, AmaReina and AmaVerde. Each sails its own programme, so it's worth comparing itineraries if your dates or preferred river are flexible.
