Travel Tips for New Zealand

Set Sail on an Unforgettable New Zealand Cruise Experience

There is something truly special about exploring Aotearoa by sea. From glacier-carved fiords and wildlife-rich coastlines to creative cities and historic harbours, a New Zealand Cruise lets you experience the country from a unique and relaxed perspective. Departing directly from local ports, cruising is a seamless way to uncover both iconic destinations and lesser-known gems without packing and unpacking along the way.

Whether you are planning a short coastal escape or a longer trans-Tasman adventure, cruising offers a front-row seat to New Zealand’s natural beauty, rich Māori heritage and ever-changing scenery. For Australians, it is also an easy extension of a holiday at home, with many itineraries pairing Australia and New Zealand together.

Cruise Lines Sailing New Zealand Waters

A wide range of international and premium cruise lines operate itineraries around New Zealand, catering to different travel styles and budgets. Popular mainstream lines such as Princess Cruises, Royal Caribbean and Celebrity Cruises offer well-rounded journeys with plenty of onboard entertainment and dining choices. These cruises are ideal for families, couples and first-time cruisers.

For travellers seeking a more refined experience, Holland America Line focuses on destination-rich itineraries with immersive shore excursions. Cunard appeals to those who enjoy classic cruising traditions, elegant dining and longer voyages that often include Australia to New Zealand by cruise routes.

Luxury seekers will also find exceptional options with Silversea, Regent Seven Seas, Seabourn, Oceania Cruises and Viking Ocean Cruises. These lines feature smaller ships, personalised service and longer port stays, perfect for travellers wanting deeper exploration of New Zealand’s coastal towns and landscapes.

Ship Options to Suit Every Travel Style

New Zealand itineraries are served by a diverse fleet, from large resort-style ships to intimate boutique vessels. Larger ships provide extensive onboard facilities including multiple restaurants, theatres, pools and family-friendly activities. These ships are a great match for scenic sea days cruising Fiordland or crossing the Tasman Sea.

Smaller and luxury ships offer a quieter onboard atmosphere, often accessing smaller ports and scenic areas with ease. These vessels prioritise comfort, space and destination immersion, making them ideal for couples, solo travellers and seasoned cruisers who prefer a slower pace.

Top Harbours You Will Discover Along the Way

New Zealand’s coastline is dotted with diverse ports, each offering its own local character, landscapes and experiences. From creative cities to wildlife-rich coastal towns, these harbours are highlights of many itineraries.

  • Tauranga – A favourite North Island port, Tauranga is the gateway to Mount Maunganui’s beaches and the geothermal wonders of Rotorua, with easy access to Māori cultural experiences.
  • Napier – Renowned for its Art Deco architecture, Napier combines seaside charm with access to Hawke’s Bay wineries and scenic countryside.
  • Lyttelton – The port for Christchurch, Lyttelton offers historic streets, harbour views and connections to the South Island’s alpine and garden attractions.
  • Port Chalmers – Serving Dunedin, this southern harbour is known for its Scottish heritage, striking architecture and access to the wildlife-rich Otago Peninsula.
  • Nelson – Set near golden beaches and national parks, Nelson is popular for art galleries, coastal walks and access to Abel Tasman National Park.
  • Waitangi – Located in the Bay of Islands, Waitangi is rich in history and natural beauty, offering pristine waters, cultural landmarks and relaxed seaside villages.
  • Oban (Halfmoon Bay) – A peaceful stop on Stewart Island, ideal for nature lovers keen on coastal scenery, birdlife and quiet walking trails.

Best Seasons for Cruising New Zealand

The main cruising season runs from October through April, covering spring, summer and early autumn. These months bring milder temperatures, longer daylight hours and ideal conditions for sightseeing and outdoor activities.

December to February is peak season, coinciding with school holidays and festive sailings. March and April are popular with travellers seeking fewer crowds and pleasant weather, while October and November showcase spring blooms and fresh landscapes. Many travellers pair these sailings with an Australia to New Zealand cruise for an extended holiday.

What Does a New Zealand Cruise Cost?

Pricing varies depending on ship, season and itinerary length. Short coastal or one-way journeys can be very good value, while longer voyages and luxury ships sit at a higher price point.

  • 7 to 10 night cruises typically range from $1,500 to $3,500 per person for mainstream lines.
  • Longer or premium itineraries often range from $4,500 to $9,000+, depending on inclusions.
  • Luxury and all-inclusive cruises are higher but include shore excursions, dining and beverages.

Booking early or securing last-minute offers can provide excellent savings, particularly outside peak summer dates.

Considering Other Regions?

If New Zealand has sparked your interest, you may also enjoy exploring nearby regions by sea.

  • Australia – Coastal cruising showcases iconic cities, reef systems and diverse landscapes.
  • South Pacific – Island-focused itineraries offer laid-back days, turquoise waters and rich cultures.
  • Asia – Ideal for travellers wanting a mix of modern cities, ancient history and culinary adventures.
  • Alaska – A dramatic contrast, featuring glaciers, wildlife and frontier towns.

Food & service.
Crowding, constant marketing of over-priced products, too American (in language, food & drink) & lack of Australian staff.

15 day expedition from Sydney

The food was exceptional compared to other cruises. Staff were lovely. Everything was an ease eg boarding, excursions and dining reservations. The Pinnale and Calletto restaurant were amazing food and service.
My sons room was on ground floor and they heard every foot step, music the band was playing til 11pm at night. It was very noisy. Not enough variety shows for people in their 20’s.

It was clean however a bit dated
