Travel Tips for Australia

Cruises from Australia: Discover Our Coastline by Sea

There’s something special about seeing our own backyard from the rail of a cruise ship. From the turquoise waters of the Great Barrier Reef to the wild cliffs of Tasmania and the vast horizons of Western Australia, cruises in Australia showcase the scale and beauty of this country like nothing else. At Cruise1st Australia, we specialise in matching Aussie travellers with the best cruises from Australia, whether you’re after a laid-back coastal getaway or an epic circumnavigation of the continent.

With so many cruises departing Australia each year, there’s never been a better time to plan your next holiday at sea.

Cruise Lines Navigating Australia

Australia’s 34,000-kilometre coastline attracts some of the world’s leading cruise lines. Whether you’re seeking family fun, contemporary luxury or small-ship exploration, you’ll find outstanding options sailing from Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Fremantle and beyond.

  • Princess Cruises Australia – A long-time favourite with Aussie travellers, offering refined dining, spacious ships and itineraries spanning Tasmania, Queensland and New Zealand.
  • Royal Caribbean Cruises Australia – Perfect for families and adventure-seekers, with action-packed ships and sailings from major east coast ports.
  • Celebrity Cruises Australia – Contemporary style meets relaxed luxury, with beautifully designed ships and standout culinary experiences.
  • Cunard Cruises Australia – Classic ocean travel at its finest, ideal for longer coastal journeys and world cruise sectors.
  • Holland America Australia – Destination-rich itineraries with a focus on culture, fine dining and immersive shore excursions.

From relaxed coastal sailings to extended voyages that circle the entire continent, there’s a cruise line to suit every style of traveller.

Ship Options for Cruising from Australia

Choosing the right ship is just as important as choosing the itinerary. Travellers looking at cruises out of Australia can select from mega-ships packed with entertainment or smaller vessels designed for a more intimate experience.

On larger ships, expect multiple dining venues, theatre productions, pools, spas and dedicated kids’ clubs. These floating resorts are ideal for multigenerational holidays and first-time cruisers wanting plenty of choice onboard.

Prefer something quieter? Boutique and premium ships offer fewer passengers, personalised service and unique access to smaller ports such as Kangaroo Island or Broome. These vessels are particularly popular on longer coastal itineraries and expedition-style sailings along Western Australia’s rugged Kimberley coast.

No matter which cruise from Australia you choose, our Cruise1st consultants can help you compare ships, cabins and inclusions to find the right fit.

Top Harbours Around Australia

One of the joys of a cruise in Australia is sailing into some of the world’s most spectacular natural harbours. Each port offers a different slice of the Australian experience.

  • Sydney – Arguably the most iconic departure point in the country. Sailing past the Opera House and Harbour Bridge is unforgettable, whether you’re embarking or arriving.
  • Tasmania – Hobart’s waterfront charm, fresh produce and access to wilderness areas make it a highlight on southern itineraries.
  • Broome – A gateway to the Kimberley, known for Cable Beach sunsets and rich pearling history.
  • Newcastle – A rising cruise port north of Sydney, blending surf beaches with a thriving food and arts scene.
  • Kangaroo Island – Wildlife encounters, dramatic rock formations and pristine beaches await on this South Australian gem.

Further north, Cairns opens the door to the Great Barrier Reef, while Fremantle serves as the departure point for exploring Western Australia’s vast coastline.

Seasonal Cruising in Australia

Australia’s size means cruising is a year-round option, with each season offering something different.

Summer (December to February) is peak season for east coast sailings, festive voyages and school holiday escapes. This is also when you’ll find popular options such as a Christmas Cruise from Australia, combining sunshine with onboard celebrations.

Autumn (March to May) brings milder temperatures and excellent conditions for Tasmania and southern coastal routes.

Winter (June to August) is prime time for northern Australia. The dry season in Queensland and the Top End delivers blue skies and comfortable sightseeing weather.

Spring (September to November) offers pleasant conditions across much of the country, plus the chance to spot migrating whales along parts of the coast.

No matter the month, there are outstanding cruises from Australia ready to explore our shores.

Cost of Cruising to Australia

The cost of cruising from Australia varies depending on ship class, cabin type, cruise length and travel season. As a guide:

  • Short coastal cruises (3–5 nights) can start from around AU$700 per person.
  • Seven- to 14-night itineraries generally range from AU$1,200 to AU$3,500 per person.
  • Extended or luxury voyages, including full circumnavigations, can exceed AU$10,000 per person, particularly on all-inclusive small ships.

Booking early often secures the best cabin selection and bonus inclusions, while last-minute deals can offer excellent value for flexible travellers. At Cruise1st Australia, we negotiate competitive fares and exclusive offers across a wide range of cruises departing Australia.

Experts Tips for cruising in Australia

Call us1300 887 590

One thing I always tell first-time Aussie cruisers, is to look for itineraries that include smaller regional ports like Eden or Geraldton. These stops often surprise travellers — fewer crowds, friendlier locals, and a real sense of coastal life you won’t get in the big cities. Also, don’t overlook shoulder-season sailings. You’ll enjoy milder weather, calmer seas, and often better cabin upgrades — it’s the insider’s secret to getting the most out of your cruise Australia.

Food & service.
Crowding, constant marketing of over-priced products, too American (in language, food & drink) & lack of Australian staff.

Too small. TV in unwatchable position. Stuffy.

8 day cruise with the Pacific Encounter to Brisbane

We booked regular time dining and found this easier than anytime dining as it pre-booked attendances for us at various restaurants. Booked tender process to go to Conflict Island was good.
The off boarding process (to Brisbane) was fairly tedious and took several hours, mostly of waiting in queues.

3 of us in a balcony room, it was fine.

Trip with Royal Caribbean from Sydney

Spending time with great friends and making new ones
There were too many feral kids I was very disappointed in the action of unsupervised children. Running up and down outside staterooms, knocking on doors after midnight, yelling and just bad behaviour in lifts. Parents should know what their children are up to not just get on the ship and leave them. I was very disappointed in this cruise but in saying that it was great to mellow, the food was great and so were the staff. I will rethink booking another one for quite a while
