7 Night Cruise sailing from Athens to Valletta aboard Wind Spirit.
Unfurling in just two minutes, some 21,000-plus square feet of sails reach into the skies at the push of a button. Sails are the first thing most notice about Windstar's ships, but a unique knack for delivering gourmet cuisine, fine wines, and personal service in a friendly unpretentious style, is what guests remember fondly when they return.
Athens (Piraeus), Greece.
Above the city, looking out towards the blue Aegean, stands the Acropolis, and here lie the ruins of a culture 2,500 years old: the Propylaea; the Templeof Athena Nike; the Erechtheum temple, and, most famous of all, the Parthenon. Meanwhile, modern Athens buzzes busily below, a city of chic restaurants, lively bazaars, sophisticated banking, historical museums, and the inimitable sights and smells of the Plaka district.
Gythion
Truly one of the world's original great urban centers, the port city of Gythion was founded by the ancient Phoenicians prior to 400 B.C. Gracing the isolated southern edge of the Peloponnese, the city has a rich political and cultural heritage. The site of many ancient battles, today Gythion is a port that is known for its ferries to Kythira and Crete as well as its superb seafood.
Siracusa
Founded by ancient Greek Corinthians, Syracusa has a long and storied history and was once described by Cicero as the "greatest Greek city and the most beautiful of them all". It is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the process of recovering and restoring the historical center of the city has been ongoing for the last two decades. Explore the Temple of Apollo, the Fountain of Arethusa as well as the Theatre, one of the largest ever built by ancient Greeks and still in use today. As well, take in the sights of commanding Venetian palazzos, medieval castles and strongholds and the stunning natural scenery.
Valletta
Situated on Malta's east coast, Valletta is a splendid city of golden stone flanked on either side by natural harbors that afford it stunning views. Known as one of the most concentrated historic areas in the world, this UNESCO World Heritage city is celebrated for its massive fortifications and excellent architecture. Activity thrives along Valletta's main avenues, Triq ir-Repubblika and Triq il-Merkanti, but a walk down the narrow back streets affords a more authentic experience of daily life as lived by the locals. Going far beyond mere "interest," main points of fascination include the charming 16th century Casa Rocca Piccola, the dazzlingly ornate St. John's Co-Cathedral, and the spellbinding views over the Grand Harbor offered from the Upper Barrakka Gardens.
