Highlights of this cruise:
Copenhagen
The capital of Denmark, Copenhagen is the country's biggest city with some five million inhabitants, taking its suburban population into account. Its position on the Baltic Sea has generated substantial maritime activities including shipyards, fishing and commerce. Its port is today one of the busiest in northern Europe.
Along with Denmark's combative Viking past, the country for many centuries underwent periods of great turbulence and military activity, particularly during the Reformation - not least with its neighbours Norway and Sweden - and Napoleonic Wars. Relations between the Danes and its northern neighbours were particularly bad, until the daughter of King Valdemar IV, Margarete, married Hakon VI, the king of Norway and Sweden, resulting in the treaty of Kalmar, which unified the three countries. However, unity did not bring peace. The three countries each became involved in religious struggles, which characterised Lutheran reform. During this period Copenhagen, (formerly called Havn, meaning port) also became the cultural capital of the country and in the first half of the 17th Century several elegant buildings were built. But disaster struck when first the plague and then two great fires decimated Copenhagen, killing three quarters of its inhabitants. Reconstruction was gradual but faithful to the city's traditions, producing a city that was, in the words of a Danish poet, 'sparkling on the sea'. During the two World Wars, Copenhagen remained neutral, a strategy which placed Denmark in a good position post-war, ready to meet the challenges of the European Union. Modern-day Denmark is one of Europe's most liberal countries and Copenhagen is one of its most cosmopolitan and lively cities. A variety of parks, fountains and city squares add to the pleasant, relaxed atmosphere.
The Danish monarchy claims to be the world's oldest, dating back to the 10th Century. The Amalienborg Palace in Copenhagen has been home to the Danish Royal Family since the late 18th Century and today includes a museum, which chronicles the Family's history through the centuries. When the Danish queen is in residence, changing of the Guard takes place at the palace at noon. In ancient times the Royal Family lived at Christianborg, a charming castle full of history and artistic masterpieces. The castle, on Slotsholm Island, hosts the Folketing, the Danish parliament.
Probably the city's most famous sight is the waterfront statue of the Little Mermaid, a tribute to the city's most famous son, Hans Christian Andersen. Another renowned sightseeing destination is the Tivoli Gardens amusement park, which is more than 150 years old. The park is close to the city centre and is a good place to join in the fun on the numerous rides available.
The city has many restaurants and bars, particularly in the Nyhaven and Stroget areas, in which to try out some of the local specialities. Copenhagen's most typical dish is the smorrebrod, a type of rye sandwich filled with herring, smoked meat, salmon and accompanied by hard-boiled egg, beetroot in vinegar, salad and onion. Also worth a try is platte, a cold dish of herrings, fish fillets, pate, meatballs and cheese.
St Petersburg
Beautiful St Petersburg is Russia's second city, with five million inhabitants. At various times it has been called St Petersburg, Petrograd, Leningrad and St Petersburg once again. It was founded by Tsar Peter the Great in the early 18th Century, as the capital of Imperial Russia, in rivalry with Sweden for its control.
It was built in the delta of the River Njeva, which has brought both great wealth and great tragedy to the city. The reign of Catherine the Great brought a period of great influence and prosperity for Russia's 'window on the West'. The 19th Century saw growing social unrest and an invasion by Napoleon, repelled by Alexander I. During the reign of the last Romanov Tsar, Nicholas II, St Petersburg became a hotbed of revolutionary fervour. During the January 1905 Revolution, hundreds of strikers were massacred by the Imperial army in front of the Winter Palace. The city was again a focus of bloodshed and street battles during the October Revolution in 1917. After Lenin and the Bolsheviks seized power, the capital of Russia was moved to Moscow, St Petersburg - by now renamed Petrograd - remaining a symbol of the Tsarist era. When the Nazis invaded Russia, the city - by now called Leningrad - resisted German attacks for three years, with the loss of some one million citizens. Reconstruction of the devastated city after World War II led to massive industrialisation.
St Petersburg's most celebrated attractions include the Peter and Paul Fortress built on the Hares Isle in the Njeva river. Formerly a military stronghold and a place of torture for the Tsar's political enemies, the fortress is now a fascinating museum.
The famous Hermitage is one of the best art museums in the world, exhibiting many Tsarist treasures and other masterpieces. The adjacent Winter Palace, official residence of the Tsar, is a classic example of Russian Baroque style, with huge state rooms and opulent decoration, once home to the Russian Royal Court and some 1,500 servants. Petrodvorets, the Summer Palace built for Tsar Peter, is located in a corner of the lovely Summer Gardens. St Isaac Cathedral best reflects the Russian vision of grandeur, standing 101-metres high, surrounded by red granite columns, and able to accommodate up to 12,000 people. Nevsky Prospekt is probably the most popular street in Russia. Four-and-a-half kilometres in length, and 25-60 metres wide, it is the commercial and cultural centre of the city, occupied by huge Baroque palaces and location of the city's best shops.
Favourite dishes of Russian cuisine include smoked salmon, pickled herring, borsht soup (cabbage, beetroots, meat and sour cream), and caviar, all washed down with the national drink, vodka.
Stockholm
The first human presence in Sweden dates back to 3000BC, when settlers following the retreating ice-floes to the north arrived on the coastline near Stockholm.
The writings of Tacitus, the first clearly to mention the Swedes, described them as 'a population on the northern coasts, devoted to farming, fishing and cattle raising'. The Vikings, who originated in Norway, did not make their presence felt until some 4,000 years later. These legendary sailors then went on to reach the coastline of distant lands including England, Iceland, Greenland and perhaps even North America. They also sailed east towards Russia.
In 1397, Sweden formed a union with Norway and Denmark under Danish Queen Margareth II. There followed a lengthy period of growing Swedish nationalism, culminating in severe bloodshed when an uprising in Stockholm was crushed by Denmark and many of the rebels were beheaded. This dark period in Sweden's history came to be known as the 'November Days'. A few years later, in 1525, Gustav Vasa was crowned king of Sweden.
Stockholm's roots go back to the arrival of Christian missionaries after 1000AD. This was followed by a period of rapid development, including the building of many churches. The city grew steadily until it became the capital of Sweden in the middle of the 17th Century. The next 200 years saw the city become rich in beautiful buildings and consolidate its position as the cultural, political and administrative centre of the country. Of Sweden's nine million inhabitants, one million live in Stockholm.
The city stretches from the Maelaren Lake to the Baltic Sea, built on an archipelago of 14 islands connected by at least 40 bridges. Gamla Stan, the mediaeval city, is particularly charming, with picturesque narrow alleyways and pretty squares. One of the most attractive is Stortorget, the site of the 'Stockholm Blood Bath' in 1520 when more than 80 Swedish nobles were beheaded, their heads piled up in the middle of the square. The 600-room Royal Palace, which was previously home to the court of Queen Christine, but is no longer the residence of Sweden's Royal Family, includes impressive state rooms, a treasury and arms museum. The ceremonial changing of the guards is a particular attraction. Nearby is the cathedral and ancient church of Storkyrkan, where many Swedish kings were crowned. The most visited museum in is the ancient ship, Wasa, which sank in Stockholm bay in about 1600. After it was discovered in 1956, the ship was brought to the surface and restored. It now resides at Wasavarvet Pavilion on Djurgaarden island, a former royal hunting preserve. Another major attraction is the palace at Drottningholm, built on an island in Maelaren lake, and the current residence of the Swedish Royal Family. It features a beautiful Baroque garden and an historic theatre. Distinctive features of Stockholm are the areas of Norrmalm and Sergels Torg, which have a tradition of democratic demonstration.
