Copenhagen
Copenhagen has no glittering skylines, few killer views, and only a handful of meager skyscrapers. Bicycles glide alongside manageable traffic at a pace that's utterly human. The early-morning air in the pedestrian streets of the city's core, Strøget, is redolent of freshly baked bread and soap-scrubbed storefronts. If there's such a thing as a cozy city, this is it. Not a microcosm of Denmark, Copenhagen is, rather, a cosmopolitan city with an identity of its own. It is Denmark's political, cultural, and financial capital and it is filled with museums, restaurants, cafés, and lively nightlife. The imaginative, unconventional, and affable Copenhageners exude an egalitarian philosophy that embraces nearly all lifestyles and leanings.
St Petersburg
Conceived in the soul of a visionary emperor, St. Petersburg is Russia's adopted child. With its strict geometric lines and perfectly planned architecture, so unlike the Russian cities that came before it, St. Petersburg is almost too European to be Russian. And yet it's too Russian to be European. The city is a powerful combination of both East and West, springing from the will and passion of its founder, Tsar Peter the Great (1672-1725), to guide a resistant Russia into the greater fold of Europe, and consequently into the mainstream of history. That he accomplished, and more. Being almost at sea level, the city appears to rise straight up from its embracing waters. Water weaves its way through the city's streets as well. Incorporating more than 100 islands and crisscrossed by more than 60 rivers and canals, St. Petersburg is often compared, except for its northern appeal, to that other great maritime city, Venice.
Stockholm
Stockholm is a city in the flush of its second youth. In the last 10 years Sweden's capital has emerged from its cold, Nordic shadow to take the stage as a truly international city. Stockholm's 1 million or so inhabitants have, almost as one, realized that their city rivals Paris, London, New York, or any other great metropolis. With this realization comes change. Stockholm has become a city of design, fashion, innovation, technology, and world-class food, pairing homegrown talent with high international standards. The streets are flowing with a young and confident population keen to drink in everything the city has to offer
Hamburg
Waterin the form of the Alster Lakes and the Elbe Riveris Hamburg's defining feature and the key to the city's success. A harbor city with an international past, Hamburg is the most tolerant and open-minded of German cities. The media have made Hamburg their capital. Add to that the slick world of advertising and you have a populace of worldly and fashionable professionals. Not surprisingly, the city of movers and shakers is also the city with most of Germany's millionaires. Hamburg has been a major port for more than 1,000 years but it reached the crest of its power during the 19th century. What you see today is the "new" Hamburg. World War II bombing raids destroyed more than half of the city. In spite of the 1940-44 raids, Hamburg now stands as a remarkably faithful replica of that glittering prewar citya place of enormous style, verve, and elegance, with considerable architectural diversity, including turn-of-the-20th-century Art Nouveau buildings.
London
Greenwich, traditional aquatic gateway to London, is a fascinating place all on its own. Sir Christopher Wren, Inigo Jones, Sir John Vanbrugh, Nicholas Hawksmoor and Joseph Kay all have important examples of their work here, which together have been deemed a World Heritage Site. Greenwich is also notable for its location at Longitude Zero, where time officially begins each day.
England's glorious maritime history is on display here, from the sailing ship Cutty Sark, to the Royal Naval College and the National Maritime Museum. On a different note, visit the elegant Fan Museum, where rare examples of this once-popular fashion accessory are on display in two lovely Georgian homes.
And if you feel the need to take in that much larger metropolis further up the Thames, just hop aboard a Docklands Light Railway train or board a river boat for transport and tour rolled into one convenient package.
