Pil'toon, Sakhalin Island

Pil'toon sits on an enormous lagoon. As we approach the lagoon entrance, scan the waters for members of the resident grey whale population. Onshore, we will meet members of a summer encampment of the Ul'ta (or Orok) people, a reindeer herding culture. We will gather at a Nivkh homestead for cultural performances by both the Ul'ta and Nivkh people. This region may already be displaying autumnal foliage at this time of year.
